Global Heart Hub Patient Voices: Caius Merșa

“From a Heart Emergency to a Life Rebuilt”

As part of our Patient Voices series, we are sharing inspiring stories from members of our Affiliate community whose lived experiences are helping shape conversations around cardiovascular health, care and recovery.

In this second Patient Voices feature, we are highlighting the journey of Caius Merșa – heart attack survivor, patient advocate and Global Heart Hub Affiliate – whose story reflects resilience, recovery and the power of transforming lived experience into advocacy and impact.

For four days, Caius Merșa was having a heart attack – and did not know it.

“It all started with chest pain… and a stubborn guy,” he says.

That “stubborn guy” ignored the warning signs of a heart attack, carrying on as normal while something life-threatening unfolded inside his body. By the time Caius reached hospital, his vision had begun to fade. What followed was not a single event, but a cascade that would change his life entirely.

At first glance, Caius’s life spans many worlds – artist, researcher, cook, teacher. Today, he is also a patient advocate working across many organisations including Global Heart Hub. But everything that defines his life now was shaped by what came next.

Thank you, Caius, for sharing your story.
