Global Heart Hub endorses the Brussels International Declaration on Lp(a)
Global Heart Hub was delighted to join leading international stakeholders as a proud partner of the inaugural Lp(a) Global Summit which took place in Brussels on March 24th & 25th calling for urgent action on one of the most under-recognised threats to cardiovascular health – elevated Lipoprotein(a). Hosted by the FH Europe Foundation, the event unveiled the Brussels International Declaration on Lp(a)—a first-of-its-kind, evidence-based policy document calling on governments to integrate Lp(a) testing into cardiovascular health strategies.
Elevated Lp(a)—affecting 1 in 5 people, or 1.4 billion people globally—is a genetic, independent, and causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) yet it remains largely undiagnosed. Global Heart Hub, together with other patient organisations and numerous scientific bodies are calling for Lp(a) testing at least once in a lifetime to enable early detection and risk stratification.

- Lp(a) in Cardiovascular Health Plans. Integrate Lp(a) testing and management into Global, European, and National Cardiovascular Health Plans.
- Investment, Workable Policy and Programmes. Commit to investment and implementation based on the latest data showing significant cost savings to healthcare systems globally.
- Political Leadership and Commitment. Mandate systematic Lp(a) testing at least once in a lifetime, ideally early, with full reimbursement—because knowing your risk should never depend on your postcode or income.
- Global Cardiovascular Risk Assessment. Embed Lp(a) testing within comprehensive CVD risk assessments and develop personalised health roadmaps free from discrimination.
- Raising Awareness. Drive public and healthcare professional education to bridge the knowledge gap around Lp(a) and its impact.
The Declaration also commits to harnessing digital tools and ethical AI to scale personalised care, while ensuring progress is monitored, evaluated, and shared across borders.
Together, we can transform the fight against inherited cardiovascular risk from a reactive approach to one that is proactive, preventive, and fair for all.
